"Ukraine 101"

Over at the Daily Kos, DHinMI lays out an awfully good explication of what's going on in Ukraine:
Today it covers a brief description of the country, a political lay of the land, profiles of the candidates, the issues underlying the struggle, and the election and charges of fraud. Tomorrow I'll cover what's happened since the election, and what may be ahead.
It's one thing to read the headlines about the recent Ukrainian election and observe how cynically and hypocritically the Bush administration has responded to the questions of voting irregularities there. (God knows, I've done enough of that eye-rolling myself.) It's another thing to actually understand the country itself, filtering the Western news reports through that filter of understanding.
