ADMIN: Commenting Change

Can of Spam image courtesy of hormel.comNot that WLIR exactly sloshes with reader comments when you rock it back and forth... Still -- and maybe because of that fact -- it's hard not to feel a little upsurge of excitement whenever I get the email notification that a new comment has been posted. Thus the letdown verges on insufferable when I actually read the new comment, only to find something like the following:
Hi! I was just fooling around on the Web and found your blog! It's a wonderful blog!

I've got a wonderful blog too and it's all about penis enlargement!
For the uninitiated, such comments are known as "comment spam." They're the product of clever innovators in the field of unauthorized commercial pitches -- "innovators" using software to locate blogs and post automated comments to random entries. In the not so distant past, Blogger introduced an optional feature called "word verification" to get around this nuisance. (You can read about it here.) Somewhat reluctantly, I've turned this feature on; I just can't stand the disappointment any longer :).
