The Courage of His Pocketbook

Now it comes out that the administration -- specifically the Department of Education -- paid conservative black commentator Armstrong Williams $240,000 to "promote the [No Child Left Behind] law on his nationally syndicated television show and to urge other black journalists to do the same."
Williams said Thursday he understands that critics could find the arrangement unethical, but "I wanted to do it because it's something I believe in."
Riiiiiight. And it was just a happy coincidence that the belief and the availability of substantial money for expressing that belief converged in time.

I think this item would be the province of what The New Yorker used to call the "Words of One Syllable Department."
