Hoist on Their Own Petards
You may have seen these already. Mrs. FLJerseyBoy has forwarded to me the quotations below, "from when president Clinton was committing troops to Bosnia":
Update, 7:30pm-ish: More examples available at DKos (here and especially here) and at Republic of Dogs; also entertaining (and, of course, relevant) is this 1999 article from Slate. And from 2003, see Mike Hersh's "When Dissent Was Duty."
What, you may wonder, does all this tell us? For an answer to that, look no further than The Weasel himself: "I think we all agree, the past is over." (Dallas Morning News, May 10, 2000)
(I'll see if I can dig up specific citations.) (Update: Citations added.)
- "Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is." --Texas Governor George W. Bush (Houston Chronicle April 9, 1999). Earlier that year, he also said: "I think it's also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn." (Scripps-Howard news service, February 9, 1999.)
- "You can support the troops but not the president." --Rep Tom Delay (R-TX). (Sorry, can't find a source for this quote -- although it's cited in a jillion places.)
- "[The] President...is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation's armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy." --Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA). (Source: This Philadelphia Inquirer piece says Ricky said so in March, 1999.)
- "I had doubts about the bombing campaign from the beginning...I didn't think we had done enough in the diplomatic area." --Senator Trent Lott (R-MS). (Quoted in Mark Shields's column, March 24, 2003. No original source available as far as I can tell.)
